JIAS Active Citizenship Fellowship 2026

What is the fellowship?

The JIAS Active Citizenship Fellowship will provide civic engagement opportunities for newcomers to Canada, enabling them to both utilize & advance their skills, knowledge, & experience. Participants will develop the necessary confidence and connections needed in order for them to play a strong, active, & influential role in civic life and their own communities.

 

What will you do on this fellowship?

  • We will have incredible guest speakers and facilitators who are academics, professional coaches, and community leaders
  • We will go on field trips to get an understanding of non profit organizations and political systems
  • You will be matched with a mentor who will work with you to improve your resume, interview skills, and introduce you to others in your professional or volunteer interests

  • Must be a Permanent Resident
  • Have a very strong proficiency in the English language
  • Active JIAS client
  • Must commit to participate in at least out of the 10 meetings
  • Able to meet with assigned mentor during the 10-month program
  • Can take on an action project or volunteer to contribute to a community, local, regional cause
  • Travel within the GTA required (assistance available if needed)

JIAS Toronto has organized this leadership program for newcomers to Canada. Some of the content, speakers, and plans are developed by JIAS Toronto staff and board.

The goal is to build a more inclusive Canada where immigrants and refugees are empowered to play a greater role in shaping their communities.
