Learn English

JIAS offers a range of free English language learning programs for newcomers.

Learning English plays a key role in building a successful life in Canada.

Language and literacy skills support employment opportunities, community connection, and a sense of belonging.

In addition to our Language Instruction for Newcomer (LINC) schools, JIAS offers a range of free English language learning and literacy programs for children, adults, and seniors in both formal and informal learning environments. Along with language instruction and practice, our programs support the development of essential literacy skills, including digital and financial literacy, to help newcomers thrive in everyday life.

English Conversation Circles (ECC)

A weekly online program that helps newcomers practice conversational English in a supportive and friendly environment. Participants learn and practice together in small groups, guided by a trained volunteer facilitator.

This program focuses on practical, everyday topics that are relevant to living in Canada and to the time of year. Groups are available at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, so learners can join at a level that feels comfortable for them.

Reading Club

A weekly online program for newcomer students in Grades 1–12 to practice reading and strengthen their English reading, comprehension, and speaking skills. Participants learn together in small groups with other newcomer youth, supported by a trained volunteer facilitator.

Books and activities are chosen based on students’ age and English skill level, and sessions include guided reading, group discussion, and fun learning games to support language development.

English Classes

Gain the skills to ease your transition to Canada.

JIAS offers free English classes for newcomers through the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program. Classes are available at four locations—two in Toronto and two in York Region. We offer full-time, part-time, and evening classes to fit different schedules. Daytime classes are offered in person, while evening classes are offered online. The LINC program is funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Before registering, clients must complete a language assessment at a recognized Language Assessment Centre.

To support adult learners with young children, JIAS provides free childcare at our two main LINC school locations for children aged 18 months to 5 years. In addition to safe care, our childcare program helps children develop skills that support their transition into the Canadian school system.

"I would like to thank Isabella, who has helped me improve my English. It is largely thanks to her that I already feel more confident and can conduct meetings on my own. Isabella not only helps me with language learning, but has expanded my knowledge in other areas. Thank you so much to you and your team of incredible volunteers and mentors!”

"I can say with confidence that my daughter was well taken care of in CNC and I will recommend it for parents with small children who wants to improve their English skills. Thanks a lot for this unforgettable 8 months!"
